Mud hedz pipes are designed, fashioned and finished by artist, Ruth Plaster. They are slip cast in earthenware clay, formed in plaster molds. The molds created for Mud Hedz pipes are made by the artist. They are produced by casting plaster over hand sculpts, actual objects and sometimes, a combination of both. Despite their molded beginnings, every Mud Hedz pipe is unique; as each is individually, hand tooled, shaped, smoothed and perfected. After being formed, each pipe is dried, fired, glazed and re-fired, multiple times until the desired look and feel is achieved. The result is, a well made, beautifully, functional, unique piece of art. Ruth’s inspiration for Mud Hedz pipes, grew out of her attraction to vintage salt and pepper shakers and to her flea market found collection of 1960’s and 70’s hobby ceramic objects. These collected and adored objects and the process behind their making, fired the artist’s determination to learn and implement the slip casting process for Mud Hedz. Ruth is proud to be one of a handful of clay artist who are defining and forging an appreciative market for small batch, hand cast, ceramic pipes.
