Salem Art Gallery presents the captivating solo exhibition by renowned artist Michael Broom. Through a masterful blend of popular horror iconography and original creations, Broom’s paintings bring to life the essence of the season. With each brush and stroke of imagination, he transports viewers to a realm where the boundary between horror and inspiration blurs.
The exhibition draws a significant amount of imagery from the location itself, the city of Salem and the spirit of Halloween serving as profound sources of inspiration for Broom. Within these enchanting surroundings, Broom has immersed himself in the rich historical tapestry of Salem, mining its centuries-old stories, folklore, and architectural charm to infuse his creations with a sense of place and time. The city’s cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and the lingering echoes of its witchcraft trials have all played an integral role in shaping the visual narrative of this exhibition. Furthermore, the vibrant spirit of Halloween in Salem, with its elaborate costumes, bewitching decorations, and a palpable sense of enchantment, has fueled Broom’s artistic vision.
Broom’s use of iconic cultural Halloween and horror creatures transcends mere artistic representation, delving deep into the collective psyche of the season. With a deft hand and a keen eye for detail, he breathes new life into these timeless figures, inviting viewers to contemplate the enduring significance of these archetypes in our cultural imagination. Through his skillful reinterpretation, Broom not only pays homage to the classics but also reinvigorates them with fresh perspectives, shedding light on the evolving narratives of fear, fascination, and fantasy. His art serves as a bridge between tradition and innovation, offering a captivating dialogue that speaks to the enduring power of these iconic creatures in shaping our understanding of Halloween and the broader world of horror.
Michael Broom is a concept artist for the Film and Television Industry, and the author of two children’s books. His Film and Television projects have included storyboards and concept design for ‘The Walking Dead’, ‘Creepshow’ (TV Series), ‘Blade Runner 2049’, and ‘X-Men: First Class’ among others. His illustrated children’s books, ‘Sky Rats’, are both currently available on Amazon.
Trained extensively in traditional mediums and branching out into digital technology, Michael now utilizes multiple different tools to accomplish his artistic goals. His interests lie in the macabre and fantastic; with inspirations like H.P. Lovecraft, H.R. Giger and Frank Frazetta, never far from his thoughts.

Intimate Magic Show in the Parlor
About this event
Pulling Strings: An Evening of Magic with Caroline Gayle
Magic has long been regarded as a mystery to the uninitiated. A puzzle to solve. In reality, magic is simply a reflection of the person who holds it. During this evening of intimate performance, Caroline Gayle (As seen on Fool Us) will guide the audience into the world of illusion, and allow each person in attendance to take magic into their own hands. What string will you pull?

These intimate nights of parlor magic with Caroline Gayle will be hosted at Nocturne, a boutique in the heart of Witch City inspired by the night. Upon arrival, you will be checked in and your hosts will offer drinks and a bar of sweets before guiding you to the parlor to take your seat. The shows will start promptly at 8:30pm each evening.
Nocturne will host three Tuesday evenings in October with Caroline. Please choose which date you would like to attend and register accordingly. Given the small venue, seats will be limited and we are unable to provide refunds.
We look forward to seeing you for this very special event!

Two Shows
Be a part of Salem’s close-up magic experience! Join an intimate audience and explore the limits of luck. Local magician Evan Northrup presents a collection of unforgettable illusions inspired by superstitions, intuition, and unlikely twists of fate.
Each seating is limited to a small number of audience members so that everyone is within a few feet of the magic. While there’s nothing inappropriate for younger audience members, this show has been designed for people over 18 years old.
WHAT PEOPLE SAY:
“Your show was AMAZING! We had so much fun and were mystified. Can’t wait for you to be back in Salem to be dazzled once again.”
Kim Driscoll, Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts
“We had a certain expectation for a magician. Not only did you deliver, you went above and beyond. You brought a life to the show that was felt by all.”
Don MacLean, Regional VP of Operations, Kings Dining and Entertainment
“I am now a firm believer that magic happens!”
Boston Teachers Union
“Exquisitely responsive to the audience in front of you. You are a wonderful storyteller as well as a magician, drawing everyone in so we were laughing one moment, and in the next we were so rapt you could hear a pin drop.”
Incredibly Eloquent Audience Member!
Is the show scary?
Nope! There are no jump scares or “haunted house” moments. You can expect some incredible, interactive close up magic and perhaps some eerie coincidences; but we’re not here to scare you (there’s plenty of that in Salem already!)
Is this a seance?
No. This show is sleight of hand and performance magic! Some occult symbols may make an appearance (who doesn’t love Tarot Cards?), but we won’t be actively communicating with deceased folks or determining our futures… … probably.
Is there an age limit?
While there’s nothing inappropriate for younger audiences, this show has been specifically designed for people about 18 years old and over. We’ve had younger audiences members who are interested in magic or theater, and they’re able to participate, but this is NOT a magic show meant for kids!
Where is the show exactly?
Inside Professor Spindlewink’s World of Wizardry – in the heart of downtown Salem right on Essex Street! After the rest of the building closes down for the night, one room comes alive with magic! All you have to do is get to the main entrance and we’ll take it from there! 194 3/4 Essex Street, Salem

Built in 1727 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Ropes Mansion is recognized as one of New England’s most significant historic structures. Fans of the 1993 movie Hocus Pocus will also recognize it as “Allison’s house” – though the inside of the home did not appear in the film. Instead, its decorations and furnishings reflect a renovation by sisters Sarah, Mary and Eliza Ropes in the 1890s. Visitors can explore the mansion at their own pace with PEM Guides on hand to answer questions.
Visits inside the mansion are included with museum admission, which can be purchased in advance online, at the museum Admissions desk at 161 Essex St in downtown Salem or via QR code at the Ropes Mansion. Timed entries are at 15 and 45 minutes past the hour with only a limited number of people allowed in the house at a given time. Visitors are requested to arrive 10 minutes before their entry time. The last entry of the day is at 3:15 pm.
The Ropes Mansion is not accessible to wheelchairs. Visitors with other mobility devices should be aware of stairs, raised thresholds and uneven flooring.
Guests, including members and Salem residents, will be able to reserve their timed Ropes Mansion tickets using the link above. If you have already purchased your museum tickets, please call 978-745-9500 to arrange your Ropes Mansion tickets.

Two Shows
Be a part of Salem’s close-up magic experience!

Inside Professor Spindlewink’s World of Wizardry – in the heart of downtown Salem right on Essex Street! After the rest of the building closes down for the night, one room comes alive with magic! About this Event
This October, for the second year in a row, we are stepping into Salem’s dark past on a candlelit visit to several of PEM’s historic houses in the heart of downtown. Hear haunting tales of murder and mystery based on real events, told by storytellers dressed in period garb. These intimate stories, told in groups of 12 or less, will be sure to raise the hair on your arms. To calm your beating heart, consider purchasing warm drinks and sugary bites. Storytelling takes place inside three of PEM’s historic houses: the John Ward (1684), Quaker Meeting (about 1688), and Derby-Beebe Summer house (1799). Tales last around 45 minutes.

Plus, join us around the fire to warm up with fiddle music and hair-raising tricks from our roving magician.
Storytelling takes place inside three of PEM’s historic houses: the John Ward (1684), Quaker Meeting (about 1688), and Derby-Beebe Summer house (1799). On your journey, you’ll come face to face with the most dangerous nurse in New England, travel down a dark road prowled by a whistling highwayman and hear the confession of a girl who believes she’s being tormented by the specters of the Salem Witch Trials – with disastrous results for her neighbors. The storytelling experience lasts about 45 minutes.
These stories are intended for mature audiences and contain themes (mental illness, drug use, murder and suicide) that some may find disturbing. Discretion is advised.

Don MacLean, Regional VP of Operations, Kings Dining and Entertainment

Things That Go Bump in the Night: An Evening of Local Lore
A very scary schoolhouse, a disruptive Salem ghost, a local haunted ship, a resident sea monster, and even a famous UFO!

This hour-long event is geared toward adults and is not for children under 12. The venue is Hamilton Hall, one of Salem’s most historic and beautiful buildings. Part of the proceeds will support the Hall’s preservation.

A generation born to war and horror comes of age. They refuse to repeat the past…
It is 1794 and Americans lust after the bounties of their newfound freedom. Harvard Medical students, eager to get ahead of their soft European counterparts, will do anything to succeed. Chief among them is Jon, driven to cure his dying sister.
Sinew & Soul is the fourth Daemonologie exploring social change, gender, and the supernatural: bodily autonomy, identity, gender roles, class, scientific and medical ethics, and the power to decide one’s own fate.
Intramersive’s open world, interactive theater encourages audiences to engage with the events around them. Audiences decide the story but don’t have to run the house.
Intramersive Media LLC is a queer, female owned and run company that believes in consent forward practices and fair sustainable practices.

About this Event
Join costumed revelers on three floors of the hotel for Salem’s bucket-list Halloween event: “Come Out and Play: Toys that Terrify.”
Welcome to the most chilling and talked-about event of the season – the Hawthorne Hotel’s Halloween Ball: Come Out and Play: Toys That Terrify. The event, introduced in 1990 and hosted by the Hawthorne, features music, a costume contest, stationed hors d’oeuvres and cash bars across three floors. DJ Stamz opens and Joe Bermudez headlines, playing music across all genres. Dance, people-watch, take selfies in front of our photo backdrops and enjoy being part of the premier bucket-list Halloween event in New England, where the world of toys takes a twisted turn.
Before purchasing your ticket, please know that tickets are non-refundable. This is a 21+ event. All tickets must be purchased via Eventbrite. Tickets are NOT available at the hotel.
The Theme:
Our theme this year, Come Out and Play: Toys That Terrify encourages guests to unleash their inner child while embracing the macabre, where the line between playfulness and horror is blurred. Prepare to be enthralled by the dark and twisted atmosphere of the toy graveyard and haunted toy shop, not knowing what lurks around the next corner.
Costume Details:
This is a costume party. You may wish to follow our theme, Come Out and Play: Toys That Terrify, and dress as your favorite terrifying toy, bringing your own childhood nightmares to life. Imagine walking alongside life-sized ventriloquist dummies, possessed teddy bears, and porcelain dolls with haunting gazes that seem to follow your every move. Or, you may choose to select a costume completely unrelated. A panel of judges will award both cash prizes and complimentary gift certificates for a number of exemplary, homemade costumes. Please refrain from incorporating real or fake weapons into your costumes, as these will not be allowed in the building. Also remember that this event draws upwards of 800 people, so you want to be sure you are comfortable and able to move about the hotel. If unsure if your costume is appropriate, please call the hotel at 978-825-4337 or email kpetty@hawthornehotel.com.
Ticket Details:
This is a ticketed event. Non-ticket holders will not be allowed entry to the hotel. Please note that tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable. This is a 21+ event. If you are under 21, you will not be allowed to enter, even if you have purchased a ticket. Doors will open by 7:30 p.m., last call is at 11:15 p.m. and the lights come up at midnight.
Safety:
The Hawthorne Hotel takes the safety of staff and guests seriously. Although not required, we hope that all of our guests contribute to this effort by being fully vaccinated and boosted prior to arrival. If you are not feeling well the weekend of the Ball, please stay home. If we want to continue to enjoy parties, social gatherings and traveling, we must all do our part to ensure the safety of ourselves and others. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
Event Details:
Assisting the hotel’s management team the night of the event are private security, police details and a fire marshal. Prior to entering the building we will ask for your ID (no exceptions), check bags, and scan you with a metal detector. Wrist bands will then be given out. Backpacks, real and fake weapons, alcohol, and outside food and drink of any kind are not permitted inside the hotel. Please leave them at home or in your vehicle. The Hawthorne Hotel is a non-smoking building. We will have a smoking area outside until 11: 00 p.m. No re-entry for any reason allowed after 11. Cash bars (credit cards accepted) will be located on each level of the hotel. The hotel does have an ATM. As there are many Halloween-themed events happening in Salem during October, please be sure you are purchasing tickets to the correct event as tickets are non-refundable.
Transportation:
Please be mindful that weekend traffic in and out of Salem during October will be a challenge. We strongly recommend using public transportation. The Salem commuter rail station is 2 blocks from the hotel, and there is also the option of taking the Salem Ferry from Boston. The City of Salem hosts free satellite parking with shuttle service to downtown. Please review https://www.hauntedhappenings.org/maps-info/parking-directions/ for complete details. Do not assume there will be available parking in or around the Hawthorne as most spots will be taken by our overnight guests.
Accommodations:
All of our guest rooms are sold out the weekend of the ball; however, we MAY receive cancellations so please call the hotel directly (978-744-4080) to inquire about last-minute room availability. There are also many hotel options on the North Shore and Boston (near North Station.) The commuter rail is less than a 10 minute walk from the Hawthorne, making it a convenient mode of transportation if staying outside of Salem. For suggestions on alternatives to staying in Salem, please call 978-825-4337 or email kpetty@hawthornehotel.com.
