The Sorcerous Traditions of the Mediterranean regions are a continum from antiquity through to the modern era. They have the influence of myriad cults, cultures, and lives. Incredibly diverse, they speak to the tenacity of the human experience. Join Navie Sousa in exploring the rich magic and heritage of Italy, Greece, France, the Levant, and Egypt.
Navi Sousa (they/them) is a Priestex of the Goddess Diana, serving Her primarily through the initiatory path of Stregoneria Italian (Italian Witchery.) They are also an initiate of Alexandrian Wica, with toes dipped into other paths as well. Making their home in New England, they can be found walking along the beach or frequenting local cafes. Rumor has it that they are way too excited about chai tea lattes, occult history, and dismantling oppressive regimes.

Location: Ropes Mansion and Garden | 318 Essex St, Salem
$5 with purchase of museum admission
Timed tickets required. If you have already purchased your museum tickets, please call 978-745-9500 to arrange your Ropes Mansion tickets.
Ropes Mansion is not wheelchair accessible. Visitors must enter and exit using a set of stone steps; parts of the tour are only accessible via a staircase.
Built in 1727 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Ropes Mansion is recognized as one of New England’s most significant historic structures. Fans of the 1993 movie Hocus Pocus will also recognize it as “Allison’s house” – though the inside of the home did not appear in the film. Instead, its decorations and furnishings reflect a renovation by sisters Sarah, Mary and Eliza Ropes in the 1890s. Visitors can explore the mansion at their own pace with PEM Guides on hand to answer questions.
Visits inside the mansion are $5 per person and require the purchase of museum admission. Tickets can be purchased in advance online, at the Admissions desk inside the museum (161 Essex Street) or via QR code at Ropes Mansion. Timed entries are at 15 and 45 minutes past the hour, with only a limited number of people allowed in the house at a time. Visitors are requested to arrive 10 minutes before their entry time. The last entry of the day is at 3:15 pm.
The Ropes Mansion Garden is open to the public every day from dawn to dusk and is free to visit. Learn more about the house with PEM Walks.

Sink your fangs into this Halloween season with Arpeggione. Experience the 1922 silent film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror with a live performance of the original score for theater orchestra at Cinema Salem. Arpeggione will be performing on historical instruments from the early 20th century, including harmonium, flute, clarinet, and strings.
From the eerily corpse-like appearance of Max Schreck as Orlok to the oft parodied staircase camera shot at the film’s climax, Nosferatu set the standard for the modern horror film as well as the genre of vampire films. As the earliest adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula for film, Nosferatu is the source of several of the most enduring aspects of modern day vampire lore.
Fans of horror, music enthusiasts, lovers of all things vintage and strange… see and hear Nosferatu as it would have sounded when it was first screened. Hurry– these tickets expire at dawn!

Event by Salem Chamber and Salem Chamber Haunted Happenings Grand Parade
The 27th Annual Salem Chamber of Commerce Haunted Happenings Grand Parade will take place, as always, on the first Thursday of October, October 3rd, 2024. The parade will follow the normal route from Prime Group Shetland Park to Salem Common.
The theme for this year’s Parade is “Our Time on Earth”, inspired by the 2024 exhibition that was previously on view at the Peabody Essex Museum, which should give parade participants a wide array of costumes and stories to tell!
“Our Time on Earth” was part of PEM’s Climate + Environment Initiative. The traveling exhibition from the Barbican Centre in London celebrated the power of global creativity to transform the conversation around the climate emergency. The structures and design featured in the exhibition were sourced from biodegradable, sustainable materials to minimize carbon footprint. And the exhibit challenged the audience to imagine the ideal future world. What will it look like? How will we use the precious time we have here on earth? What will it take to live together in harmony? And that’s exactly what the Salem Chamber hopes all students and schools will do this year: use everyone’s creativity to talk and educate about the climate crisis. Looking for ideas or inspiration for your costume? Explore #OurTimeOnEarth on Instagram!
The Parade is a special nighttime tradition for the city of Salem and visitors alike to officially kick off Salem’s Halloween season. The evening should be a night full of color, pageantry, music, and the enthusiasm of thousands of Salem’s students from kindergarten to college plus many local business owners. Over 15,000 spectators (children, adults, and those in between) are expected to attend.

The Vampire Circus has been called a mix of circus cabaret and theater and is the result of a fusion of Tim Burton and Cirque Du Soleil.
Heralded as a mix of circus cabaret and theatre, The Vampire Circus is a mysterious, tantalizing, fun, dark, cutting-edge production guaranteed to amaze the senses.
Enjoy a phenomenal night of live entertainment, based on the multidisciplinary skills of International performers showcasing theater, dance, and gymnastics. This amazing show pushes the physical boundaries of human performance and leaves audiences amazed, astounded, and astonished.
Mortal spectators will experience horrific feats of Cirque acrobatics, comical audience interactions, contortionists, jugglers, acrobats, and clowns. Tantalizing sounds, and mesmerizing illusions catapult audiences into an emotional roller-coaster of fear and joy, laughter, and wonder with raving cheers for a “Mad Graveyard Clown.”
The 90-minute production is an immersive ride through the Underworld and Vampires. The Vampire Circus was inspired by the magical, captivating allure of legendary traveling carnivals — and a vision of Francisco Santos, CEO founder and Cirque Du Soleil veteran performer.
Set in Bohemia during the 19th century, Count Dracula contemplates a plan for world domination, when he decides to open a traveling circus with his gypsy bodyguards. The Vampire Circus is a perfect cover-up to travel unnoticed and begin his world reign of terror and turn all humans into an army of vampires for global dominance.
The Vampire Circus is a journey that takes audiences into an immersive experience, plunging guests into a deep hypnotic state while “breaking the fourth wall.” With Vampire Circus, audiences are fully integrated into what is happening in front of them, surrounding them, and at times “inside” of them.
The Vampire Circus will delight the senses and deliver the unexpected. As the moon comes out the magical mystique of the Vampire World begins.
Come meet the Vampires. We will leave the lights off for you!!

Theme: Celtic Halloween celebration (Samhain)
Description
Step back in time and immerse yourself in the mystical traditions of Samhain at our uniquely themed masquerade party! Travel 300 years and thousands of miles into the past to experience Halloween as the Celts celebrated it since the early 9th century.
Samhain (pronounced “Sow-win,” meaning “summer’s end”) marked the transition into fall, a time when the veil between the living and the dead was at its thinnest. Join us as we recreate this ancient celebration with a modern twist!
