I sell a range of products, from originals and matted prints of my work (in both small 8×10” and large 11×14” sizes) to greeting cards, illustrated booklets, and mugs. They feature fantastical birds and creatures, goddesses of folklore and myth, and, inevitably, animal puns. (Crabcakes, they’re out there!)Amelia Royce Leonards lives and works in Rockport, Massachusetts. She graduated from Montserrat College of Art with a BFA in illustration in 2008. Since then, she has done both personal and professional commissions which have included book cover illustration, logo design, and portraiture. Her medium varies depending on her mood, but she generally prefers to use either watercolor or graphite.
I had a fanatic professor in college who would beat his chest wildly and declare “Real art does NOT communicate!” I couldn’t disagree more, and I sketched an unflattering cartoon of him ranting on his anti-illustration soapbox on his end of semester review to communicate my feelings on the matter. (Fortunately I never landed in his class again, because even though the reviews were anonymous, somehow he just knew it was me). Real art DOES communicate, thank you very much, be it a feeling, an idea, or a story. My primary passion is visual storytelling, and I mostly draw my themes from the folklore and mythology of ancient civilizations and faraway lands. I honestly can’t explain why I feel so driven to educate people about our collective past by sharing these tales- possibly because by rendering these half-forgotten fragments and snatches in paint, I am both contributing to them and being absorbed by them. My greatest aspiration is to produce work that is recognizable in theme but distinctly my own, because then I will have not only become part of the story, but given it something of myself as well.
