    About The House of the Seven Gables

    Merchant and ship-owner John Turner built the house on Salem Harbor in 1668. It later inspired Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1851 novel The House of the Seven Gables. In 1910, Salem philanthropist Caroline Emmerton restored the mansion and opened it as a museum and settlement house to support the city’s immigrant community.

    That settlement work continues today. The Gables offers free English as a Second Language, citizenship and digital literacy classes for adults.
